Music, mascots, players and refs.....
This year's Super Bowl Highlight themed SpringFest had it all! Our staff and students worked very hard to make it one of the best. We would like to say a special thank you to members of the Cass City Marching Band for enhancing the show with their sick beats!

We are excited to share the news of a new Peer-to-Peer Program at HPS. This program is a collaboration between Highland Pines and Schall Elementary School. This pilot program will focus on peer-to-peer activities that will provide students with opportunities to learn from one another, build new friendships and develop essential skills, like teamwork and communication. These monthly activities will help students feel more connected and included while having fun. We believe this experience will help everyone grow, both in school and in their friendships.

Last week was full of basketball at HPS. We had a Staff vs student game, Project Unified game, hosted HPS vs Huron ISD games, and also held an Around the World competition. Students that didn't play were able to cheer the teams on. Even the HPS Husky made an appearance and took a stroll through the school! Special thanks to the Caro Project Unified students for mentoring our students and participating in our basketball fun! More pictures to come.

The Bowl-A-Thon was a great success. The funds raised will benefit Area 10 athletes who compete in winter and summer games. Thank you to the Caro Unified students for being a part of this great event!

It was a fun wintery day for Ms. Driscoll's classroom! Students made snow angels and enjoyed some sled time on the HPS hill.

A.M.P. (All Music is Power) was at Highland Pines School. What a musical treat that was! Our music therapist, Stacy Reno, facilitated this awesome event for our students! Check out the link below for more information. https://allmusicispower.com/about-a-m-p/

HPS celebrated our PBIS monthly winners. Be a Friend, Be Responsible and Be Safe are the three principals our students work very hard to achieve. This month's reward for all students who had no office discipline referrals was a fun filled flashlight scavenger hunt!

Highland Pines has lots of holiday spirit! Enjoy moments from our tree lighting, Holiday Huskies parachute performance and Winter concert.

Mr. Thompson's classroom enjoyed learning how to make a Stromboli. It was a great time and a delicious lunch! Thank you Miss Patti for the fantastic lesson!

Unified Sports teams are helping to break down barriers through sports.
This program is dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experiences. Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team.
It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.

Highland Pines hosted the 5th annual Trunk or Treat event last Thursday. Each year it keeps getting bigger! TISD employees and community organizations took part in making this a great event. There were 28 spots giving away treats and 328 trick or treaters this year. If you weren't able to attend, we hope to see you next year!

The HPS soccer season has come to an end. The Huskies did a fantastic job this year with a 2-0-2 record!

A few of our classrooms went fishing yesterday at Bay City State Park. It was a nice sunny day for some fresh air! This state park has been fantastic working with our staff and students to make learning fun.

The Pumpkin Festival was a great success for HPS. Our students shared their artistic talents by decorating pumpkins. We also showed our Husky spirit in the parade on Sunday.

HPS staff and students had a busy Friday last week. They took part in the Walk A Thon to help raise funds for Special Olympics. This event helps raise funds to send athletes to both summer and winter games. Thank you to the Caro Lions Club and bus drivers for cooking and serving lunch for everyone. Total miles walked as a school was over 380 miles!
At the end of the day, The Caro Marching Band arrived to perform for us. They were great! Thank you Mr. Cramer for sharing your students and their talents with us!

Professional Development is very important in a school setting. This is where all staff come together to learn new information and collaborate in order to make the educational experience of our students meaningful and successful. At the start of the school year the HPS staff participated in a poverty simulation. This was an exercise to learn all the obstacles families can be faced with outside of the school setting, but still can affect the student during school. This last Monday HPS staff had a half day of professional development. There was input from all staff individually, as a classroom and also as a whole to insure all voices were heard, suggestions shared and student progress celebrated.

The Dental Bus was at Highland Pines today! This is a fantastic service we facilitate for our students twice per year. We love to see those smiles!

The students at HPS not only learn academics at school, they also learn life long skills in our Adapted PE/Aquatics program.
The Highland Pines Adapted Physical Education Aquatic Program strives to teach students to swim and be safe around the water. Application of aquatic knowledge and skills not only improves an individual's physical fitness, but also establishes framework for an active leisure pursuit appropriate throughout the life span. The benefits of water are enormous!
