Highland Pines School hosted a Family Outreach Fair on Saturday. The gym was set up with a bounce house, obstacle course and corn hole games. The pool and hot tub were open for use. Over 25 agencies participated and handed out information to families. We also had Kona Ice and The Fry Guy food trucks on site. This event was a great success and over 200 families attended.

We are excited to share the news of a new Peer-to-Peer Program at HPS. This program is a collaboration between Highland Pines and Schall Elementary School. This pilot program will focus on peer-to-peer activities that will provide students with opportunities to learn from one another, build new friendships and develop essential skills, like teamwork and communication. These monthly activities will help students feel more connected and included while having fun. We believe this experience will help everyone grow, both in school and in their friendships.

Last week was full of basketball at HPS. We had a Staff vs student game, Project Unified game, hosted HPS vs Huron ISD games, and also held an Around the World competition. Students that didn't play were able to cheer the teams on. Even the HPS Husky made an appearance and took a stroll through the school! Special thanks to the Caro Project Unified students for mentoring our students and participating in our basketball fun! More pictures to come.

HPS and Caro High School students came together for a floor hockey competition. Unified Sports teams are helping to break down barriers through sports. This program is dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experiences. Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.

HPS staff and students had a busy Friday last week. They took part in the Walk A Thon to help raise funds for Special Olympics. This event helps raise funds to send athletes to both summer and winter games. Thank you to the Caro Lions Club and bus drivers for cooking and serving lunch for everyone. Total miles walked as a school was over 380 miles! At the end of the day, The Caro Marching Band arrived to perform for us. They were great! Thank you Mr. Cramer for sharing your students and their talents with us!

Professional Development is very important in a school setting. This is where all staff come together to learn new information and collaborate in order to make the educational experience of our students meaningful and successful. At the start of the school year the HPS staff participated in a poverty simulation. This was an exercise to learn all the obstacles families can be faced with outside of the school setting, but still can affect the student during school. This last Monday HPS staff had a half day of professional development. There was input from all staff individually, as a classroom and also as a whole to insure all voices were heard, suggestions shared and student progress celebrated.
